1. Sacrament of Baptism
Rite of Baptism – Baptism is our birth as Christians, our birth as "other Christs." Through many centuries Christians loved to view the baptismal font as the womb of holy, Mother Church: for at the font her children come forth alive with a new and higher life – that of God himself. Baptism
is necessary before one can receive any other sacrament. It is the first sacrament of Christian initiation, which is completed with the sacraments of Confirmation and the Holy Eucharist. Baptism was instituted by Christ when He was baptized by St. John the Baptist and when He commanded his apostles to go and baptize all nations in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. (Cf. Matthew 28:19)
Baptism removes all sin; original sin and any other sins. Baptism also makes us children of God, members of Christ, members of the Church, and heirs to the kingdom of heaven. This means that Baptism permanently relates us to God and is necessary for salvation; Baptism imprints an indelible character on the soul of the recipient and can be received only once.
A candidate for Baptism must have at least one sponsor, or godparent.
i. The godparent can not be the mother or father of the one to be baptized.
ii. The godparent must be at least 16 years old, be a Catholic who has been confirmed, and has received the Holy Eucharist.
iii. There can be two godparents, a man and a woman.
iv. Non-Catholics can not be godparents, but can be admitted as witnesses to the baptism.
Registered members of the Cathedral Parish who wish to have a child baptized, are to contact the parish office (251-434-1565), to set up an appointment with a priest/deacon of the Cathedral Parish to complete necessary forms for baptism and discuss the essentials of the Sacrament of Baptism.
Non-parishioners of the Cathedral Parish who wish to have their child baptized at the Cathedral,
need to telephone the Cathedral Parish office to schedule the date and time for the baptism, and it will be necessary to complete the baptismal information form, as well as have a priest/deacon who is to perform the baptism to send a letter to the Rector of the Cathedral seeking permission to perform the Sacrament of Baptism and to ensure all necessary information is ascertained in order to be placed in the Baptismal register of the Cathedral.
